Diamond fever leads to discovery of second giant stone | Financial

The latest gem, owned by operator and diamond company Lucara, was found at the Karowe mine in Botswana, some distance from the first find of a clear stone from supplier Debswana. That is the world’s largest producer of diamonds, it owns four diamond mines.

According to local media, much smaller diamonds were also found. It is the third stone of more than 1000 carats from the area, where miners have increased their activities again after the immense finds.

According to Naseem Lahri, director of Lucara Botswana, the find is ‘history’, ‘for us and Botswana’. The stone was handed over to the president of Botswana. Many diamonds disappear to India for processing.

Good luck Asscher

These two diamonds are nevertheless still in the shadow of the largest of all, the Cullinan, the 3106 carat gemstone. The Dutch diamond merchant Joseph Assher processed the stone, quarried in South Africa in 1905, from the Premier Mine in Cullinan in Gauteng.

In 1907 he split this stone with a single blow in the Amsterdam Pijp with his own developed instruments. All parts were usable.

The nine large and 96 small diamonds have been incorporated into the British crown jewels. Part of it was sent by post from Amsterdam to London.
