Marie Antoinette was the wife of the French king Louis XVI. In 1973, in the wake of the French Revolution, she was executed on the guillotine, a few months after her husband. She was the last French queen. Marie-Antoinette was not always popular, many citizens were displeased with her luxurious lifestyle, while many French themselves lived in poverty. They also accused her of being a bad influence on her husband.
Although not all myths about Marie-Antoinette correspond to reality, it is true that she liked to be surrounded by beautiful and expensive jewelry. The diamond bracelets that are now up for auction are an example of this. Marie-Antoinette bought them in 1776 from Charles Auguste Böhmer, her personal jeweler, even though she was already deeply in debt at the time.
