Dialogues on talent with Pep Guardiola: Insights on Sacrifice, Tactics, Social Media, and More

All across the board. Pep Guardiola, coach of Manchester City, was a guest at the Palazzetto dello Sport in Cuneo for the event “Dialogues on talent with Pep Guardiola”, created by the CRC Foundation in collaboration with the Vialli and Mauro Foundation for Research and Sport Onlus, the Guardiola Sala Foundation and with the support of Collisioni. Many themes were addressed, including the need for sacrifice and work: “Obsession is linked to passion, if you have an obsession it means that you like something. Special talent is important, but many hours of work are also needed. Sacrifice is needed.”

DEFEAT AND VICTORY – “People say that you learn more from defeat, but with victory you live better. Above all, balance is important. You have to stay calm when you win and not think that everything is a disaster when you lose” .

THE IMPORTANCE OF TACTICS – “Is football more physical today? Since I started, this discussion has always been had. Today they eat and train better, but I believe that tactics only serve to help the players perform better, it should not be separated from technique. Tactics are a way to make it clear that we are all going in the same direction, it’s not an aesthetic thing, it’s at the service of the players.”

TOO MANY SOCIAL MEDIA –You don’t become strong by lying in bed, on Instagram. If you want to be a photographer you have to take a thousand photos. Now the problem is that we think about what others say, not ourselves. Every player today thinks they played very well. He reads some criticism and goes home sad. And viceversa. Young people need to think about their opinion which is the one that really counts. Do you like playing football? Play a lot. If you stay at home on social media you won’t be able to be successful, it’s more difficult.” TALENT IN ITALY – “There is talent everywhere, I don’t think there isn’t any in Italy. I don’t follow much because I don’t have much time but I’m sure it’s there.”

ALLEGRI-GUARDIOLA – “It’s an ancient argument, do you think that Allegri doesn’t want to win? The same goes for De Zerbi too, they both want to win. Allegri is convinced that he can win with his ideas, ditto De Zerbi. De Zerbi isn’t looking for aesthetics, he wants to win. And I believe I can do it by playing according to his beliefs. The same goes for Allegri, he also wants to win. All coaches want to win, no one thinks only of the good and says they don’t care about winning. I’ve never seen a coach who doesn’t want to win or a player who doesn’t want to play well. They are ways of interpreting football.”

JUVE AND THE FLIRT OF 2019 – “He never looked for me, in Italy the food is very good. Would I coach him? I really like Italy, I often come on holiday.”

THE END – “Tiredness? Maybe it will come, but I don’t feel it yet. Maybe that passion will die out… If it happens I’ll call you.”
