Dialogue and Presidential Elections in Lebanon: National Moderation’s Stance and the Future of Kleiat Airport

“Lebanese Debate”

A member of the “National Moderation” bloc, MP Walid al-Baarini, confirms that “the bloc, from the first day of the launch of the presidential elections, stresses the need for dialogue and understanding to complete the elections, and regrets that the Lebanese political forces are unable to elect a president without external mediation.”

And about the position of the “National Moderation” bloc regarding dialogue and the response to the message of the French presidential envoy, Jean-Yves Le Drian? In an interview with the “Lebanese Debate”, he clarifies that the “National Moderation” bloc supports any call for dialogue, consultation or communication between the Lebanese, and this is what we have initiated since 11 months until today, and with regard to the response to the message of the French envoy, he is the subject of consultation within the bloc to take a decision. The appropriate step, and before the end of August, of course, things will be clear.”

Al-Baarini hopes, “The decision on the presidential file will be today, before tomorrow, and we do not wait until September, because the issue of deadlines has been repeated for months, and we used to hear the saying of a president before New Year’s and a president before July, and today they say during September.”

In a separate context, Al-Baarini touched on the project to operate and develop the Kleiat Airport, stressing that “the requirement to operate the Kleiat Airport is a basic requirement for our bloc, and our demand for it will continue until it is achieved due to its vital, economic and developmental repercussions for our regions.”

And about the occurrence of objections by certain parties to the re-operation of Kleiat airport? He affirms that “we have not heard any objection from anyone to the demand, but at the same time we have not yet seen serious steps from those concerned regarding it, on the pretext that we are in a caretaker period, and therefore our demand will take a different framework after the election of a President of the Republic and the restructuring of institutions,” stressing that “the region The North is working together on this demand, and we have the support of many personalities, events, and associations, and this demand is a national demand, not a factional one.
