Diagnosing Nipah Virus (NiV) Infection: Tests, Symptoms, and Importance of Early Detection

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Nipah virus (NiV) infection can be diagnosed during illness or after recovery. Different tests are also available to diagnose NiV infection.

In the early stages of the disease, laboratory testing can be carried out using real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) from throat and nose swabs, cerebrospinal fluid, urine and blood, quoted from the page CDC.orgWednesday (19/9/2023).

Later during illness and after recovery, antibody testing is performed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Early diagnosis of NiV infection can be challenging due to the nonspecific nature of the initial symptoms of the disease.

However, early detection and diagnosis are critical to increase the chances of survival among infected individuals, to prevent transmission to others, and to manage response efforts to outbreaks.

NiV should be considered for people with symptoms consistent with NiV infection who have lived in areas where Nipah is more common, such as Bangladesh or India — especially if they have known exposure.
