Diablos Rojos beat Sultanes; they are one victory away from the championship

Monterrey. Diablos Rojos seems determined to end soon with its aspirations of becoming champion of the Mexican Baseball League after a decade without achieving it. It does not matter if it is in a foreign home and passing over the rival, the Sultanes de Monterrey, who despite playing the third game of the series in two days due to the ravages of the rain, were unable to react and fell for the third consecutive time now with a score of 2-0.

The Pingos were one win away from taking the King’s Series, but they got here with an authority that leaves the champions of the Northern Zone, who have accumulated 21 innings without scoring, unrecognizable. The last roll in which the Sultanes stepped on the cash register was in the sixth inning of the first game at the Alfredo Harp Helú stadium. Since then, the Monterrey team has not been able to ring the bell and now walks unsteadily on the edge of the precipice.

In the fifth inning Diablos scored the only run of Saturday with Juan Carlos Gamboa. On the scarlet mound, Trevor Bauer gave another of his memorable performances, with an impeccable arm and keeping the rivals at bay; he only allowed four hits and struck out four in the six innings he pitched that day. Only the top of the seventh could be played and then the rain forced the suspension of the game and when it seemed that the weather would allow it to continue, frustration came over the disastrous state in which the diamond of the Mobil Super was left. The bottom part had to be postponed until the following day.

On Sunday, Justin Courtney was the one in charge of continuing the work on the mound and managed to come out unscathed. The Sultans, on the other hand, did not take advantage of the break to make amends for what they have done so far in the series.

In the last inning, the Pingos showed that they are in a hurry to win the crown and José Pirela hit a solo home run to increase the score to 2-0 and destroy the spirit of the rivals. The Venezuelan ran the bases with true joy, as if he knew that those hits do damage not only on the scoreboard, but in something deeper, in the soul of the rivals.

The Colorado pitchers completed the rest of the mission, in the eighth Edwin Fierro allowed only one hit and kept the score intact and Tomohiro Anraku was in charge of closing the game.

Since Sunday morning, the Reds looked relaxed and with the happiness that those who do not live under pressure allow themselves. Hours before the continuation of the third game, Trevor Bauer and Robinson Canó were recognized in the Hall of Fame for their achievements in the season.

Bauer was honored for setting the record for most strikeouts in a LMB game, with 19 strikeouts against Oaxaca on June 21. The American pitcher gave the ball with which he achieved that mark to the Hall of Fame.

“You never think that one of your items is going to end up in the Hall of Fame, so it’s a tremendous honor to have the ball stay here,” Bauer said.

“The baseball belongs to Mexico, to Mexican baseball. Every time a fan comes to this venue, he can see it and thereby help baseball and the legacy of this sport grow,” he added.

Canó, for his part, received recognition for winning the batting championship in the regular season.
