Diablo III from 2012 was not as well received and therefore the demand for a new version of Diablo II has been great. In 2020, it was reported that a new version of Diablo II is in development, with no further details on the developer responsible. Now a report of Bloomberg that the new version is underway, and at the same time highlights development details. Vicarious Visions is responsible for translating the Playstation classics in the Crash Bandicoot trilogy into a modern edition titled N’Sane Trilogy, as well as the acclaimed remakes of the first two parts of the classic Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater skateboard series. According to the report, Vicarious Visions has become a support studio within Activision Blizzard and, as of now, will not be developing its own game projects.

The Bloomberg report further states that Diablo II Remake was originally developed by Blizzard Team 1, a group responsible for modernizing older games. The group’s latest project was 2020 Warcraft III: Reforged, a release that was met with heavy criticism for not delivering on promise and a huge list of technical shortcomings.

The report does not indicate when a new version of Diablo II can be released. As Blizzard Team 1 as recently as last year was destined to be a developer and the fact that Vicarious Visions is only now becoming a support developer within Activision Blizzard does not indicate that a launch will take place in a Next future.

How hungry are you for a Diablo II remake? And does Vicarious Visions sound like a more promising developer than the Warcraft III: Reforged group?
