Games like Diablo and Borderlands inspired developers to create the open world cooperative game Redfall.
Arkane Austin, the creators of Prey and Dishonored, are teaming up with Redfall on an open-world co-op RPG about vampires besieging a small town.
In an interview with GameMe+, co-creative director Ricardo Bare talked about the games that served as inspiration for the development team’s vision for Redfall.
So it was co-op games like Borderlands and Diablo that the team played together outside of their jobs and had a lot of fun with.
“I remember from the beginning when we were working on Deus Ex, playing Diablo together as a group and then over the years Diablo 2 and then Borderlands and all those super fun co-op games that we, when we’re not working on our kind of game, play those kinds of games together as friends. And we were like, ‘How can we eat our peanut butter and chocolate together? How can we make the kinds of games that we like but somehow play them together?'”
Arkane Austin studio director Harvey Smith said that Dungeons & Dragons is always the first thing that comes to mind when asked about the co-op inspiration of Redfall.
“I live in constant fear that people will find out that we’re just D&D players who think video games can be more interesting and deeper. D&D is the best co-op game ever and I think people would be shocked to know how many times we’ve played D&D together as a group, from Origin Systems to ION Storm to Arkane. I’m currently playing through three different D&D campaigns and am still playing with Ricardo on Monday night.”
Redfall is coming to consoles exclusively for Xbox Series X | this year S and Windows PCs. It will also be playable through Game Pass on the day of its release.
