Diablo 2: 12 things we’d love to see in a future remaster [CHRONIQUE]

Blizzcon 2021 kicks off this Friday, and every year Blizzard fans wonder about the potential announcements that will be made at the event. For my part, I dream of unveiling, this year, a Diablo 2 remastered up to date.

So I made a small wish list that I would like to see fulfilled in a possible remaster from the famous game.

The return of eight-player games

Diablo 2 is one of the best games to play in a LAN party. With the pandemic behind us, wouldn’t it be amazing if we could get together with seven other friends to play this game?

The return of specialization trees

The skill tree system has influenced many games, including World of Warcraft, especially. This system allowed players to customize their characters and rewarded them for investing points in certain skills by unlocking more powerful abilities.

Integration of “Rifts” and “Greater Rifts”

Purists might throw tomatoes at me because I want a Diablo 3 in Diablo 2, but adding “Rifts” and “Greater Rifts” wouldn’t be a bad thing. These challenges have extended the lifespan of Diablo 3 and it would be fun to be able to do the same with Diablo 2.

Better graphics without touching the skeleton of the game

Even if we ask for a lot of aesthetic modifications, what I really want is not to modify the structure of the Diablo 2. The essence of the game must not be lost. I cannot repeat it enough: in addition to its “ancestral” graphics, the spirit of Diablo 2 and its playability approaching perfection.

Launch Day 1 with expansion Lord of Destruction

Please don’t be old pennies, Blizzard.

Use Battle.Net’s existing infrastructure for multiplayer, which eliminates the chances of hitting hackers

Blizzard has learned a lot about multiplayer. Advances in technology have made online gambling an enjoyable experience, and it is now quite easy to play with friends, or even strangers, safely. The infrastructure is already there, you might as well use it!

Redo the epic cutscenes of the time

Although at the time, the cutscenes of Diablo 2 were most impressive, seeing them again today, we can see that they have aged badly. We saw what Blizzard was able to produce by watching the cutscene of Diablo 4. So let’s apply this same formula!

Why not a new class?

Purists will throw tomatoes at me once again, but I wouldn’t say no to a new class. The selection of Diablo 2, plus that of expansion, has appealed to a vast majority of players. To give me some ideas, I went to dig a little into the history of Dungeons and Dragons.

  • Clerc: a sort of priest who might be a bit like the necromancer, but who would use divine forces
  • Dark Paladin: he would use powers related to black magic
  • Barde: he would invoke the magic of music and song.
  • Artificer: some kind of magical engineer

Above all, ESPECIALLY, do not touch the original story

I can only repeat myself: the story of Diablo 2 is perfect.

Bigger inventory and more shared inventory tabs

It was not for nothing that there were hundreds of mods and tips on the web to grow your inventory and shared inventory (stash). It was way too small! I am not the only one to ask.

Automatic gold pickup

These are small improvements like that that can make a game, which is already very good, ten times better.

Being able to kill the Cow King without consequence

Why can this only happen once? This is one of the things we want to do and do again: be able to go back to the world of cows to hear “moo moo moo” everywhere.

We will see, tonight, if my dreams come true. If not, I promise this list will be released before each Blizzcon, until a remaster of Diablo 2 becomes reality.
