Diabetics must do this to prevent blindness

Tulungagung (ANTARA) – People with diabetes mellitus are required to control the intake of sugar that enters the body in order to prevent the emergence of other chronic diseases, one of which is glaucoma which can cause blindness.

“Almost most of the diabetic patients have vision problems. In severe cases, this can lead to bleeding and complications,” explained the ophthalmologist at RSUD dr. Iskak, dr. Hera Lesmana Sp.M in Tulungagung, East Java, Thursday.

Hera said diabetes is closely related to the eyes because it can cause complications. Common symptoms experienced by patients include dry eyes, reduced vision, cataracts, and even bleeding.

“All the symptoms experienced by this patient lead to a decrease in eye function and as a result, vision is increasingly disturbed and decreased,” he explained.

That is why it is better for patients diagnosed with diabetes to go to an eye clinic for a checkup. This is an attempt to perform early detection of the optic nerve as a result of diabetes.

Having an early diagnosis, continued Hera, can help reduce patient morbidity. In addition, preventive measures can be taken immediately.

“For example, patients only experience symptoms of dry eyes, this can still be overcome by being given medication and regular consultations. However, if left unchecked, these symptoms can lead to other, more severe symptoms,” he explained.

For this reason, he continued, the most important thing for patients to do is to keep their sugar levels from becoming excessive.

The simplest way is to change your lifestyle and adopt a healthy lifestyle. “It can be done with more exercise, reducing sugar intake. Because patients whose sugar levels are not controlled will certainly have an impact on eye complications,” he said.

The same thing was conveyed by the Coordinator of Food Management System Management (MSPM) RSUD dr. Iskak Tulungagung Preriestika Wiajeng, S.Gz.

He advised diabetic patients to maintain a diet with a special diabetes diet.

“There are various types of diabetes diet that can be done, but must be in accordance with the advice and consultation with a doctor to be more targeted,” he said.

However, in general the principle of a diabetic diet is to help patients control the intake of sugar that enters the body. This is because the hormone insulin, which is responsible for controlling sugar intake, cannot be produced optimally.

The first thing you can do is count the number of calories in each serving of food. Second, prioritizing the consumption of highly nutritious foods.

One of them is by increasing the portion of consumption of fruit, fresh vegetables, fish, low-fat meat, and whole grains. “The last thing that should not be forgotten is exercise and adequate rest,” he said.
