Diabetics During Ramadan: Guidelines and Rules for Fasting – National Research Center Medical Bulletin by Dr. Maha Ibrahim Abdel Moaty

Muhammad Sobhi Monday, March 4, 2024 04:00 AM Issued National Research Center A medical bulletin by Dr. Maha Ibrahim Abdel Moaty, Professor of Nutrition at the National Research Center, about diabetics during Ramadan, which includes a number of general rules and guidelines for fasting people with diabetes.

Among the rules and guidelines for fasting for diabetics are:

1. Care must be taken to measure the blood sugar level several times a day: in the morning, at midday, at afternoon prayer, before breakfast, after Tarawih prayer, and before suhoor, especially for diabetics who need insulin.

2. Hurry to break your fast and make sure to always eat suhoor and delay it until the maximum possible time (just before dawn).

3. It is preferable for breakfast to be similar to lunch on normal days, and for suhoor to be similar to breakfast and dinner on normal days, with a light meal in between.

4. Drink more fluids between breakfast and suhoor in the form of various drinks such as water and soups, and reduce canned and sugar-sweetened juices as much as possible. It is preferable to drink moderate amounts of fresh juices prepared at home without adding sugar. Dehydration is one of the most harmful complications of diabetes, and exposure to the heat of the sun and crowds should be avoided while fasting.

5. Make sure to eat foods that contain dietary fiber, such as legumes, vegetables, and fresh fruits, because they prevent a rapid rise in blood sugar levels after eating. In addition, they avoid constipation and increase the feeling of fullness.

6. Avoid sleeping in the period an hour or two before the Maghrib prayer. This is known as the critical period for a fasting diabetic patient because the blood sugar level during this period is low, and its level may drop in the blood while you are sleeping without you realizing it. You should also reduce physical activity during this period. .

7. When performing Umrah rituals in Ramadan, it is necessary to wear cotton socks so as not to cause redness and skinning of the feet. It is preferable to perform Umrah rituals at a time when there is no sunlight.

8- Exercising during Ramadan:

It is strictly forbidden to exercise during fasting hours, and the best time to exercise is one or two hours after breakfast, and exercise may be replaced with Tarawih prayers.
