People with early stages of diabetic retinopathy may not need treatment. However, they must still be closely monitored by an ophthalmologist trained to treat diabetic eye disease.
Once your eye doctor sees new blood vessels growing in the retina (neovascularization) or you have macular edema, treatment is usually necessary.
Eye surgery is the main treatment for diabetic retinopathy.
Laser eye surgery will create small burns on the retina containing abnormal blood vessels. This process is called photocoagulation. This action is used to prevent blood vessels from leaking, or to shrink abnormal blood vessels.
Surgery called vitrectomy is used when bleeding (hemorrhage) occurs into the eye. This surgery can also be used to repair retinal detachment.
Medicines injected into the eyeball can help prevent abnormal blood vessel growth.
Have eye exams as often as recommended, usually every 1 to 2 years. If you have diabetes and your blood sugar is very high, your doctor will prescribe a new medication to lower blood sugar levels.
