VIVA – COVID-19 has been shown to have a long-term impact with symptoms ranging from fatigue to shortness of breath. However, experts are starting to worry about the link between COVID-19 and diabetes which seems to have started to increase since the pandemic started.
Quoted from The Sun, Tuesday, March 22, 2022, scientists in the UK and US sounded the alarm early in the pandemic, after seeing a spike in cases of the potentially life-threatening condition. Research has since linked corona virus that with type 1 diabetes and 2.
Professor Francesco Rubino, from King’s College London, led research into the link and warned that we may be seeing an entirely new and yet unseen form of diabetes. According to him, it could lead to new understanding of how diabetes develops, paving the way for new treatments.
Both type 1 and 2 diabetes occur due to a lack of the hormone insulin in the body. Type 1 is the result of a genetic disorder and occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Type 2, which is lifestyle-related and appears later in life, occurs when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or the insulin it produces doesn’t work properly.
