German dentist Stefan Zimmer said that diabetes negatively affects oral and dental health as well. A high blood sugar level increases the risk of cavities and a dry mouth.
Diabetics also suffer from low calcium in saliva, which makes it difficult to remineralize teeth, so acids easily attack tooth enamel.
In addition, diabetes improves the chances of infection and paves the way for periodontitis, which may lead to tooth permeation and fall, noting that the most prominent symptoms are bleeding gums and the emission of an unpleasant odor from the mouth.
To avoid these risks, diabetics must control the level of blood sugar, with good dental care by cleaning them twice a day with toothpaste containing fluoride.
It is also important to undergo periodic examinations at the dentist to detect any diseases early and treat them in a timely manner.
