Diabetes needs to be handled properly to avoid the risk of heart failure

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Internal medicine specialist, Dr. Ferica Valentine Kuhuwael, Sp.PD, explained that one of the complications that often occurs is due to diabetes is heart failure. Ferica explained, someone who has diabetes generally cannot recover completely. So what can be done is to keep blood sugar levels normal. This is to prevent various complications that can occur.

Diabetes or diabetes is a long-term or chronic metabolic disease. Diabetes has several types, the first, second, and gestational types.

In the first type of diabetes, the failure of the pancreas results in a decrease in the production of insulin, which functions to stabilize blood sugar levels. Whereas in the second type of diabetes, there is ‘Insulin Resistance’ caused by a lifestyle due to lack of exercise, obesity due to food intake and others.

“Then it is also known as the type of Gestational Diabetes that occurs in pregnant women, although not all pregnant women will experience this third type of diabetes. There are some common signs and symptoms of people with diabetes such as drastic weight loss, hunger and thirst frequently and frequent urination, ” said Ferica via live Instagram with the Heart Failure Clinic Siloam Hospitals Kebon Jeruk, Friday (28/01/2022).

Citing a study conducted by the Framingham Heart Study, it was revealed that the risk of heart failure twice as high in men, and five times as in women who have diabetes. The risk of developing heart failure increases with age and duration of diabetes.

Therefore, Ferica advises individuals with diabetes to manage their diet and exercise. In addition, diabetics also need to carry out regular checks, one of which is through laboratory tests.

“The aim is to detect, among other things, knowing blood sugar levels so that doctors can diagnose and provide effective treatment methods,” said Ferica who practices at Siloam Hospitals Kebon Jeruk.

Before checking fasting blood sugar levels and checking HbA1C, Ferica suggested fasting first.
