Diabetes in Children Can Be Started from a High-Carbohydrate Diet

JAKARTA (RIAUPOS.CO) – Pediatrician Dr. Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, SpA(K) reminded parents that type 2 diabetes in children can be started from a diet with a high glycemic index such as high in carbohydrates, flour, sugar and trans fats.

The Chairman of the Central Board of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) explained that if children are continuously given foods with a high glycemic index from the start, especially snacks that are low in nutrition but high in fat or junk foodhas the potential to increase blood sugar and lower it back drastically.

“They are hungry again, eat like that again and again like that so that insulin will be produced continuously. Insulin will continue to have high levels in the blood and then the pancreas becomes overworked over (so diabetes occurs),” he said in a virtual media briefing held by IDAI, Wednesday 1/2/2023).

Not only type 2 diabetes, even children who have type 1 diabetes, if they are constantly given junk food, will also cause their blood sugar to fluctuate easily.

“Even children with type 1 diabetes, if they are constantly given junk food, later the need for fast-acting insulin is very high and blood sugar is sometimes hyper, hypo, needs insulin and this increases health costs,” said Piprim.

Piprim advises children to get animal protein foods plus green vegetables so they are full longer so they don’t go crazy over eating unhealthy snacks. Apart from maintaining their diet, children also need to adopt other healthy lifestyles such as being active, exercising, and getting enough sleep.

“Other lifestyles such as gadgets, children who don’t want to move, exercise, lack of sleep will also accelerate the occurrence of generative diseases, premature aging due to chronic inflammation,” said Piprim.

Piprim said, diabetes begins with insulin resistance which also begins with insulin levels that are continuously triggered high so that the body becomes resistant, then finally the pancreas gets tired so that diabetes occurs. This condition, again, is very closely related to diet.

According to him, type 2 diabetes, which is usually experienced by adults aged 40 years and over, is now also affecting many teenagers. Diseases that include diseases related to aging problems are also referred to as new lifestyle diseases.
