Jakarta –
The Indonesian Pediatric Association (IDAI) confirmed that there has been an increase in cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus in children. One of the causes of type 2 diabetes is the habit of consuming too many sweet drinks.
“The youngest in our hospital is a 13-year-old diabetes patient,” said Dr. Siska Mayasari Lubis, MKed (Ped), SpA (K), Member of the Endocrinology Coordination Unit of IDAI (UKK) from Adam Malik Hospital, Medan. , in a webinar on Tuesday (26/11/2024).
Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body’s cells become less responsive to insulin’s attempts to push glucose into the cells, a condition known as insulin resistance.

In the long term, if left untreated, diabetes in children can trigger kidney problems that may lead to dialysis or hemodialysis in adulthood.
Therefore, Dr. Siska reminds parents about additional guidelines, especially regarding children’s snacks. Because many packaged drinks sold contain high levels of added sugar that may increase the risk of diabetes in children.
“We can assess what snacks they have at school, for example, he said, buy fruit juice in a box and buy chocolate flavored milk. Based on what they eat, we can judge are their children too much sugar,” he said.
