Many people think that taking diabetes medication causes kidney failure.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Uncontrolled diabetes causes complications, one of which is the kidneys. Is this caused by the drugs consumed or other reasons?
Prof. Dr. Dr. Sidartawan Soegondo SpPD-KEMD said diabetes that damages the kidneys is caused by uncontrolled disease. It’s a sign blood sugar prolonged high until organ damage occurs.
“If the organ has been damaged, the condition cannot be restored,” explained Sidartawan in a webinar for Hari Diabetes Worldwide with the theme “Prevent Early Kidney Complications in Diabetes Strugglers” organized by PT Kalbe Farma Tbk (Kalbe), quoted on Wednesday (16/11).
Certain drugs cannot be given if the diabetic kidney function is not good. Therefore, when doing an examination at the doctor, the patient is always checked for his kidneys.
“Therefore, it must be checked, it is not allowed to take medicine from friends. Because the patient’s condition is different,” said the specialist in metabolic endocrine consultant disease.
According to Sidartawan, often diabetics do not know they have diabetes. His condition was only discovered when he had kidney complications and had to undergo dialysis.
