Jakarta –
When talking about diabetes, maybe what comes to mind is someone who is obese or overweight. But it turns out, this disease can also attack people who are thin.
This was revealed by an endocrine, metabolic and diabetes expert from the University of Indonesia, Prof Dr dr Rr Dyah Purnamasari Sulistianingsih, SpPD-KEM, FINASIM. According to him, being overweight or obese is only one of the risk factors that can trigger diabetes.
“So actually the body mass index is only one risk factor. Another factor is physical activity, then there is family history, and habits such as smoking,” he said in a press conference in Central Jakarta, Friday (7/7/2023).
“That means, even though he is thin, at least one risk factor is absent. But as much as possible other risk factors are avoided. He remains active, he avoids smoking, and avoids alcohol, so that prevention is really multi-disciplinary and comprehensive,” he continued.
While quoted from Time, curvy people with diabetes have a higher risk of death than obese patients. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed that diabetic patients who were thin had a death rate two times higher than those who were obese.
The study also found that people with a small body index (BMI) do not necessarily have a small fat component in their bodies. Research shows that people with an ideal BMI may have hidden visceral fat deposits around the abdominal cavity, which can affect the performance of the hormone insulin to break down sugar levels in the body.
