This year’s WDD commemoration is aimed at promoting the role of caregivers, especially families in diabetes management, care, prevention and education, as well as increasing public awareness of the impact of diabetes.
As of May 14, 2020, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) reported that 463 million adults in the world have diabetes with a global prevalence of 9.3 percent. However, a dangerous condition is 50.1 percent of people with diabetes (diabetics) are not diagnosed.
This makes the status of diabetes as a silent killer still haunts the world. The number of diabetics is estimated to increase 45 percent or the equivalent of 629 million patients per 2045. In fact, as many as 75 percent of diabetes patients in 2020 are aged 20-64 years.
Kalbe Nutritionals as a subsidiary of PT Kalbe Farma Tbk. through the Diabetasol brand, a specialized diabetes nutrition manufacturer, always supports diabetics to stay healthy by continuing to provide total diabetes nutrition to maintain blood sugar and education to the wider community. Diabetasol and a diabetes diet, is important as nutrition for diabetes.
Kalbe Nutritionals Director of Special Needs & Healthy Lifestyle Nutrition, Tunghadi Indra emphasized that his party is committed to conducting sustainable diabetes education, not only in Indonesia, but also in several countries in Asia, such as in the Philippines, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Myanmar.
“Especially the current condition of diabetes which is very high risk during the COVID-19 pandemic. By maintaining blood sugar, it can help reduce the risk of diabetes from complications of COVID-19, “said Tunghadi to the media in Jakarta, Tuesday (3/11/2020).
Tunghadi said, the increasing prevalence of diabetes in the world, especially in Indonesia, plus the risk that can occur to people with diabetes during this pandemic, shows that diabetes needs special attention from all circles.
“Diabetes cannot be cured, but its management really needs attention. In addition, a support system around people with diabetes is also urgently needed, “said Tunghadi.

Meanwhile, Executive Committee Member of the IDF Western Pacific Region (2009-2011 & 2012-2015), Prof. Dr. dr. Sid Journalist Soegondo, Sp.PD, KEMD, FACE, explained that according to IDF data, as many as 90 percent of people with diabetes are type 2 diabetes or diabetes mellitus.
The increase in the number of people with type 2 diabetes is driven by the complex interplay of socio-economic, demographic, environmental and genetic factors. Other major contributors include the flow of urbanization, an aging population, reduced physical activity in urbanized societies, and increased obesity and overweight.
The high number of diabetics makes diabetes control requires everyone’s attention as well as national policies with an integrated approach. The presence of diabetes conscious communities and diabetes care families is needed to increase community awareness and alertness in controlling diabetes.
“The family is an effective and easy intermediary to carry out health efforts. Efforts that a family with diabetes can do include planning meals, exercise, drug management, and education, “he explained.
Things that still need to be improved are family efforts in regulating a healthy diet and balanced nutrition, as well as the invitation to exercise. Research results related to positive family support, leading to better blood sugar control.
Especially in Indonesia, the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Endocrinology Association (Perkeni), Prof. Dr. dr. Ketut Suastika, SpPD-KEMD reminded that according to IDF data, Indonesia has a diabetes alert status because it ranks 7th out of ten countries with the highest number of diabetes patients, namely 10,681,400 people per 2020 with a prevalence of 6.2 percent.
This figure is estimated to increase to 16.7 million patients per 2045. With this year’s data, 1 in 25 Indonesians or 10 percent of Indonesia’s population has diabetes. Of these, most cases of type 2 diabetes are caused by an unhealthy lifestyle.
“Everyone must be aware of their condition, because diabetes is one of the comorbid or comorbidities found in COVID-19 patients in second place, which is 34.4 percent of cases in Indonesia,” he said.
In addition, the President of PB Persadia was elected for the period 2020 – 2022, Dr. dr. Sony Wibisono, Sp.PD-KEMD, Finasim explained, since its establishment 48 years ago, Persadia has been proactive in educating the public about diabetes, both for people with diabetes and their families.
According to him, diabetes management planning should be discussed between the person with diabetes and their families. Diabetics must receive a coordinated and integrated medical care from the health team, so that families need to be aware of the importance of taking part in diabetes mellitus treatment so that blood sugar levels can be well controlled.
“Planning for the management of diabetes mellitus must be carried out jointly between patients and their families so that blood sugar levels can be controlled,” he said.
Diabetics need a special nutritional diet to effectively regulate their blood sugar levels as well as meet their nutritional needs. Persadia as a forum for diabetics, continues to educate and even works with all parties so that they can jointly manage diabetes.
