DIA‘s new song “Demon” arrives in the tradition of the best of the ethnic artist. The song combines tradition, a modern look, a non-standard video and the unique vocal capabilities of DIA, for which she is called the Bulgarian ethnic princess.
“Demon” weaves into itself one of the most popular folk songs “Pustono ludo i mlado”.
DIA and Alex Nushev create a new musical line that preserves the beloved and familiar refrain, but gives precedence to the author’s style. The text is by Dimana Mircheva-DIA herself, and the words come to life in a picturesque video, in which the performer plays the role of the main, fatal heroine.
“The song represents a dream of mine where I, the woman, am the demon. My voice tells a story between me and a man who wants me to be his wife. He sees in me not the dark part, but the light part. The demon for him is light, air and water. Without his demon he cannot live. But I run from him because I am a supernatural creature and cannot be next to a mortal. Even people point the finger at me and say: It is the darkness! There’s a demon hovering there!’
The implication of the strong words and the affecting melody are enhanced by the feeling that the location of the pictures brings.
“Demon” finds its home in the 100-year-old building of a former ceramic factory. It has been called an architectural masterpiece and is built entirely of timber imported from the Alps, with load-bearing brick walls. The feeling of ancient mysticism is enhanced by the special participation of Yavor Ljubenov, who dons the sumptuous costume of a survakar (in Perniško, masquerade characters are called survakars).
“His costume is also exceptional – says DIA – It was made from specially treated skins in the village of Vitanovtsi, Pernik region, and its bells weigh over 50 kilograms. The mask of the survakarya is a true work of art, created from hides and horns.”
The symbolic escape of darkness from light, of sin from love and of the demon from the survakar is masterfully conveyed by the professional visual team of: Petar Simeonov, Angel Peshkov and Pavel Pavlov, and the emblematic folk sound is from Petyo Kostadinov’s bagpipe.
