Human traffickers have changed the routes for illegal migrants to Western Europe. The “Balkan route” is not closed, and traffickers are diverted to Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia, the Vienna edition also writes.
Evidence that the business of traffickers is booming is the data of the Federal Criminal Police, according to which the number of people who entered Austria illegally with the help of traffickers is almost the same as last year, when their number was 20,975 people.
The federal police did not report the exact data for this year, but from there they specify that it does not differ from last year’s.
“Photos on social media clearly show that this year many more people from Africa are heading to Europe,” said the head of the Federal Police’s central anti-trafficking directorate, Geralr Tatzgern.
Austrian border police have found that traffickers are abandoning migrants to their fate at the Austrian border.
The border control along the “Balkan route” has negative consequences, because countries like Macedonia or Bulgaria are faced with the problems of corrupt police officers, who use bribes to improve their income, “Di Presse” also writes.
The publication claims that individual countries treat traffickers who bring in migrants differently from those who take them out.
When it comes to protecting their own territory, the Balkan countries, including Italy, apply stricter measures and cooperate with foreign services. But, when the migrants continue their route, then the police claim that they did not use the services of traffickers and act on the principle – “a refugee who goes is a good refugee”, the publication also says.
