Di Caprio: From “blood diamonds” to artificial diamonds in Extremadura, Spain

From the movie “Blood Diamonds” to the manufacture of synthetic diamonds! The famous actor’s company, Diamond Foundry, will create an industrial complex in Trujillo that will manufacture diamonds.

Trujillo, a small town in the province of Cáceres, will become the setting for a macro-project in which actor Leonardo DiCaprio is the main protagonist. This time it’s not about a movie project, but about building a factory for sustainably produced synthetic diamonds by a North American company.

Extremadura’s sun and the site’s optimal orographic conditions convinced Diamond Foundry, the largest American producer of diamonds for the jewelry sector – of which DiCaprio is the main investor – to set up its artificial diamond factory there.

The 30,000 square meters will house plasma reactors in which the artificial gems will be developed, and which will be powered by solar energy thanks to the photovoltaic power plants that will be installed on the site. The total investment cost is approximately $700 million, with hundreds of jobs involved.

It is an artificial process, without the traditional human and mining exploitation, from which the factory will obtain diamonds for various uses. On the one hand, of course, for jewelry. On the other hand, and above all, for industrial activity, which produces diamond crystal chips whose semiconducting properties are used in the manufacture of mobile phones or car batteries.

Sixteen years ago, Leonardo DiCaprio starred in the film Blood Diamonds, in which he denounced the extraction of precious stones in war zones; diamonds which were then sold to finance these armed conflicts.
