Di Battista-Cattaneo, an almost predictable dialectical clash in Di Tuesday’s living room. Giovanni Floris’ program on La 7 was in fact their ring several times and once again the two found themselves in different and distant positions. This time the two discussed the war in the Middle East and the choices made by our government in recent days. Floris asks: “How did our government react to the Hamas invasion?”. Alessandro Di Battista explains his thesis: “how he reacted when Moscow invaded Ukraine” and that is “promoting pro-Israel propaganda, showing an Israeli flag from Palazzo Chigi” and according to the former 5 Star Movement “this doesn’t help address a problem”.

To avoid any misunderstanding, the former leading man of the Grillini clarifies: “I have always supported the Palestinian cause” and “the task of a Prime Minister or of someone who works as a journalist or politician is to try to provide solutions by looking at the future” and off with a polemical look at the past “I have the resolutions violated by Israel, the reports from Amnesty International and Save the Children which attest to a state of apartheid committed by the Israeli government in Palestine” – in the background Cattaneo tries to contest. Di Battista, however, does not grasp the provocation: “I believe that it would be useful for a prime minister – moreover a sovereignist sovereignist” and “who claims to think of the collective interest” – he underlines – “to tell us something about the future. Today for me there will never be peace if the state of Palestine is not guaranteed a sovereign and legitimized existence.”
Floris passes the ball to Cattaneo: “this government reacted with its head held high and without any ambiguity. We stand with the state of Israel. Point. Today is not the time to distinguish, it is not the time to bring out resolutions.” “Today”, says the deputy coordinator of Forza Italia, is instead the time “in the face of a terrorist attack which has no equals both in terms of size and brutality” to say “we are with Israel” and this is why “we have put the flag of Israel” seraphically closes the Cattaneo issue.

Di Battista returns to the attack: “what do you plan to do tomorrow as the Italian government? To support raids? Support once again a ghettoization of Gaza which is a concentration camp within a concentration camp? An open-air prison?” – Cattaneo shakes his head – “but do we really think that the only way to deal with Islamic terrorism is to avoid radicalization and throw even more bombs?”
By now Di Battista has lost all restraint and continues his reasoning: “I remember that what MP Cattaneo and Forza Italia supports today is the exact same thing that all centre-right deputies supported when there were terrorist attacks”. Cattaneo looks at him doubtfully and chooses silence, but not Di Battista who concludes: “the answer has always been: we must destroy Islamic terrorism. We are going to Afghanistan because the power of the Taliban must be destroyed and then they reached an agreement with the Taliban.”
