The express division of the logistics group DHL is investing 22 million euros in an environmentally friendly new building in Bremen. It should be operational in a year.
Bremen – Markus Reckling speaks of a big step into the future, of the beginning of a new era of sustainability. A new building in Bremen plays a major role on the path to climate neutrality, which the Deutsche Post DHL Group aims to achieve by 2050. The Managing Director of the DHL Express Germany division (which is responsible for international express shipping) presented the plans for this on Thursday.
According to this, a service center of the size L is to be built at Louis-Krages-Strasse 30-38 – and thus three kilometers from the current location on Hüttenstrasse. Here, from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., all parcels sent from the greater Bremen area to the wide world and from the wide world to Bremen and “around” will be processed here. All “Formula 1 packages”, i.e. those that are supposed to get from the sender to the recipient within 24 hours. “Umzu” in this case means, among other things, up to the North Sea coast. “The service area begins southwest of Hamburg behind Stade, leads via Bremerhaven all the way to the west coast of the city north and includes the East Frisian Islands. The southern border lies between Vechta and Osnabrück, the eastern border ends shortly before Walsrode, ”says DHL spokeswoman Maike Wintjen. The closest DHL express centers are in Hamburg, Hanover and Bielefeld.
Back to Bremen: The building permit is available. In the next week, the construction signs are to be put up on the 18,000 square meter site in the industrial ports. And in time for the Christmas business in 2022, for the “next heavy traffic” next November, the express center with production and office space of around 5000 square meters should be completed and fully functional. “It’s a sporty approach,” admits Reckling. DHL Express has it built and then rents the turnkey property for an initial period of 15 years. The project developer is Mileway Germany from Frankfurt am Main. The investment volume for the new location with around 230 employees amounts to around 22 million euros, says Reckling.
Unloading facilities for 96 delivery vehicles
The investment in the network is also an investment in the Group’s sustainability strategy, the aim of which is to be climate-neutral by 2050. Heat pump technology, photovoltaics and LED technology will reduce CO2 emissions by 50 to 60 percent, says the DHL Express boss.
A solar power system with an output of up to 250 kilowatts peak is installed on the roof of the express center. In addition, the building is to have improved ventilation technology and height-adjustable cushion seals on the gates, and it is to be prepared for 80 positions for electric vehicles in the future. Initially, 30 e-vans will be launched.
Capacities are tripled
The new facility will have three PUD fingers (“Pick-up and Delivery”) with direct loading and unloading options for 96 delivery vehicles at the same time. It also has a sorting system that is designed for a shipment volume of 6,000 parcels per hour and through which all national and international DHL Express shipments, including customs clearance, are to be processed quickly and efficiently. With the new building, the capacities of the previous location will be almost tripled, says Reckling.
DHL Express has 33 locations across Germany, including XL editions in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart. And according to Reckling, it reaches 95 percent of the world within three days with 250 aircraft, among other things.
