HANOI (ANTARA) – The cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in Vietnam in 2022 have so far more than doubled from the same period last year, the local health ministry said on Thursday.
Hospitals have been asked to prepare for more cases.
Vietnam reported 89,120 cases of dengue in the first six months, up 148 percent from 35,936 cases in the same period last year.
Deaths from the disease also tripled to 34 people in the same period.
The country of 98 million people has typically recorded about 110,000 cases a year in recent years, with infections peaking between June and October.
“The number of cases is expected to continue to rise, while more severe cases require hospitalization,” said Vietnam’s Ministry of Health, which issued special guidelines for health care providers this week.
“All hospitals at the provincial and district levels need to focus their resources on receiving and treating severe cases,” the ministry said.
DHF is transmitted by mosquitoes and is commonly found in Southeast Asia. The disease causes flu-like symptoms and so far there is no vaccine.
Severe symptoms of the disease can cause internal bleeding.
