Melsungen / Erlangen. Exactly 24 days after the Bundesliga match, MT Melsungen and HC Erlangen meet in the second round of the DHB Cup. With a success in national cup competition, Northern Hesse can take revenge on the unfortunate 34:34 draw at the end of September.

The venue is not the huge Nuremberg arena, as usual with Franconian league appearances, but the much smaller Karl-Heinz-Hiersemann-Halle in Erlangen. The launch is scheduled for 7:30 pm on Wednesday. The game can be viewed live on sportdeutschland.tv.

Room for individual cases

While the Franconians usually play championship games in the 8,500-seat Nürnberger Versicherung Arena in Nuremberg, they will remain in their hometown for the 2nd round of the DHB Cup. The Karl-Heinz-Hiersemann-Halle, 1,800 seats, once also home to the matches of the HCE Bundesliga, it is now used only as a gymnasium and, in individual cases, for appearances in the DHB Cup.

Like December 12, 2013 against MT. At the time, Melsungen lived up to his role as favorite and moved on to the quarter-finals after a clear 33:24. After that, Northern Hesse made it to the Final Four against Göppingen. That things can go very differently for cup opponents in this small hall was proved almost exactly eight years later when HSG Wetzlar was invaded on December 14, 2021 with 31:19.

Aim for the next round

“It’s actually pretty tight there and it’s a pretty hot place,” Michael Allendorf knows from his active days as a player. The current sporting director of MT Melsungen also pays tribute to the opponent because he still remembers the championship duel three weeks ago: “We are aware of what awaits us in Erlangen. On the other hand, we played a good match there and in the end we were unlucky to lose a point. We should have closed the bag earlier given the advantage in the meantime. “

The motto of the next cup duel is obviously clear: Northern Hesse wants to enter the next round! In addition, Roberto Garcia Parrondo relies on almost the same cast as last time in Magdeburg. That means, still with Elvar Örn Jonsson, but still without Domagoj Pavlovic. Furthermore, Finn Lemke, Timo Kastening, Julius Kühn and Rogério Moraes are still missing. This time, the two young Manuel Hörr (17, defender) and Lasse Ohl (17, circle) will be present from the prospect team.

No reason for poor performance

In addition to the staff situation, the requirements for this cup match on both sides are different for another reason: While four players from the Franconian team were on international duty last week, MT has ten players eliminated for matches on the European Parquet. Fortunately, they all returned unscathed on Sunday evening, but the efforts of a full week of training, two international matches and the change of venue with the corresponding travel tensions were still clearly evident in the players. That’s why this cup date is not particularly happy for us, as the team with the most international commitments, “says Michael Allendorf. What is not meant to be an upfront justification for a possible lack of performance on Wednesday.

Success story of the Erlangen Cup

MT prepared for HC Erlangen with two training sessions and have already started their trip to Franconia on Tuesday afternoon. To be welcomed there the next day by a team whose memories of the last cup are without exception positive and still quite fresh. Because the HC around former MT professional Johannes Sellin participated in the semi-finals of the REWE Final Four in Hamburg on April 23 this year. Although the match against favorite Magdeburg was lost at 10:30 pm, this participation in the final testifies to the most successful chapter in the history of the Erlangen Cup. Which in turn is a bit wider at MT Melsungen: the red and white have already been four times in the Final Four.
