DGS can access the location of citizens’ mobile phones

In a first analysis it can be considered an intrusive measure … but calm! Information that may not be relevant to users can be critical to the health system. The idea is to monitor, anonymously, the circulation of citizens.

The strategy is already in place in other countries and, as we have already mentioned, in times of “war” it is necessary to put military strategies on the ground.

Pplware is aware that operators, the Government and the NHS are working on a solution so that they can have access to the location of citizens' mobile phones. This information was confirmed today by António Costa, and the information was published by the newspaper Public. It should be remembered that this practice has already been used in other countries and was also being considered in neighboring Spain.

In an interview with the new podcast Politics with a Word, an initiative of the PS integrated in the celebrations of the 47th anniversary of the party, Costa began by refusing any type of georeferenced screening to combat the new coronavirus:

I don't think this is justified under any circumstances. There is, in fact, no recommendation from any European institution in this regard (…). What exists is a set of applications that are being developed, that anyone can download and that establishes community shares [de informação] always anonymized.

No tracking, no geolocation, no identification of people!

However, the Prime Minister admits that the DGS may have…

The possibility, for example, of DGS having access from my mobile phone to the identification of mobile phone numbers that mine has been close to for more than 'x' time and less than 'x' distance during the last 14 days and send a message to these people, without knowing who they are, stating that their cell phone has been in proximity for more than ten minutes, or 15, with the cell phone of a person reported as infected

The objective is to fight the “new” Coronavirus on several fronts. To carry out such an operation, the Government will have to rely on the cooperation of the operators. It is not yet known any details of this “strategy” or when it will be operational (if this happens).
