Officials of the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence (Dgcim) arbitrarily detained William Urdaneta, photojournalist for the Correo del Caroní.
Urdaneta, in the company of the journalist José Rivas, was complying with an informative bitch on the morning of this Friday, July 31, when officers approached him, who alleged that “they took him away for photographing military cars”.
Through Twitter, the National Union of Press Workers (Sntp) as well as the directive of the media for which it works, demanded the release of Urdaneta, which occurred hours later.
However, they took away his cell phone and camera memory.
The board of directors of the National College of Journalists of Ciudad Guayana denounced the actions of the officers.
“From the regional government it is intended to control through the abuse by the Dgcim, journalists and photographers of various media in the area, thus violating the rule of law and our Law on the Practice of Journalism,” said Javier Samuel Paredes, Secretary General of the guild in Guyana.
In the CNP press release, Paredes demands that the governor of Bolívar, Justo Noguera Pietri, “on behalf of all the journalists and graphic reporters, cameramen and press workers (…) cease the persecutions and disrespect for what has been dictated by the Magna Carta on the right to free movement and the Law of the Exercise of Journalism ”.
He stressed that “the only objective that we understand is to try to silence the reality that we suffer day by day and that is collected by the local media, something that is already known to the public as unsustainable for all Venezuelans.”
