DFB-Pokal semi-final draw: Bayern Munich’s Pokalschreck SC Freiburg to face holders RB Leipzig in repeat of last year’s final

Bayern Munich’s Pokalschreck SC Freiburg meets holders RB Leipzig in the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal in a repeat of last year’s final. The second semi-final duel on 2./3. May contest another Bundesliga duel between VfB Stuttgart and Eintracht Frankfurt. That was the result of the draw on Easter Sunday by national handball coach Alfred Gislason in the ARD sports show. The final will take place in Berlin’s Olympiastadion on June 3rd.

Leipzig, who prevailed on penalties in last year’s DFB Cup final against Freiburg, eliminated Borussia Dortmund (2-0) in the quarter-finals. Stuttgart had won in the round of the last eight teams at second division 1. FC Nürnberg (1-0). Europa League winners Frankfurt beat Union Berlin 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

On Saturday, FC Bayern took revenge in the Bundesliga with a 1-0 win in Freiburg for the 2-1 draw against Breisgau in the cup.

DFB Cup: Draw for the semi-finals to read in the live ticker

End: That should have been from this point. Have a nice evening and happy rest of Easter.

End: With that, the draw is complete. You don’t need one for the final. Who knows how long it would have taken otherwise. .

Also: So it’s all about home rights now. Frankfurt or Stuttgart? Quickly answered, Stuttgart can enjoy home rights. And guess who has to travel.

Here we go: Freiburg gets a home game. And here is the opponent. It’s the defending champion. So we get a replay of the previous finale.

Club representative: Guest in the audience is Perry Brautigam as ambassador for RB Leipzig.

Hitzlsperger: The drawing manager explains that he has received many messages from his circle of acquaintances. One seems to wish for a home game in Stuttgart. He doesn’t go into the subject of preferred opponents. Will probably be a team above VfB in the table.

Rückblick: A short cinematic review of the quarter-finals. That’s just part of the program. Cheering people from Freiburg, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Leipzig. You know the pictures. Then Gislason and Hitzelsperger enter the stage, the latter with the trophy under his arm.

Not for long: You will have to be patient for a moment. The draw will take place as part of the ARD sports show. And there the summaries of the second division games of the day are shown.

Before start: The venue is, almost as usual, the German Football Museum in Dortmund. Should someone else say that Dortmund is already out.

Before start: Freiburg won against Kaiserslautern (2nd division), St. Pauli (2nd division), Sandhausen (still 2nd division) and Bayern. Can one now argue about who had the hardest path. But it was probably easiest on paper for VfB.

Before start: Leipzig beat Teutonia Ottensen (regional league), HSV (2nd division), Hoffenheim and Dortmund. VfB Stuttgart prevailed against Dresden (3rd division), Bielefeld (2nd division), Paderborn (2nd division) and Nuremberg (2nd division).

Before start: A brief look back at the path that the individual teams took on the trip, which should ultimately lead to Berlin. Eintracht knocked out Magdeburg (2nd division), Stuttgarter Kickers (Oberliga), Darmstadt (still 2nd division) and Union Berlin.

Before start: The coach of the national handball team, Alfred Gislason, made himself available to win. Thomas Hitzlsperger serves as, of course, a completely neutral draw manager. Of course, the dates for playing the games have long been fixed. The games are played on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the first week of May.

Before start: What else do we need to know? It’s rare these days, so it’s worth mentioning. All teams are entered into ONE pot. No seeding lists, full risk! Like in old times! One thing is as always, whoever is drawn first has home advantage.

Before start: Leipzig is in the semifinals for the third time in a row, Freiburg for the second time. But with Eintracht and VfB there are also two exotics. Looked at from a different perspective, SC Freiburg is more exotic, as the Breisgauers are the only team that has never won the cup. RB won for the first time last season, VfB has already won three times, and Eintracht has even won five times.

Before start: There were only four left! Not there for the second year in a row Bayern AND Dortmund. Apparently you have to get used to that. First signs of a changing of the guard at the top of the German football pyramid? Or a question of priorities? A little variety is certainly good for the competition.

Before start: The draw starts at 7 p.m.
