For Bundesliga club Union Berlin, the new season starts with an away task in the DFB Cup at Karlsruher SC. “In the end we have to be convinced that we can solve this task, I assume so,” says Union coach Urs Fischer. Union won the last five of the 20 duels so far. 450 spectators will be there this time as part of the hygiene and safety measures due to the corona virus. In addition to KSC, FC Ingolstadt will also face a higher-class rival in the duel against Fortuna Düsseldorf.

Second division FC Erzgebirge Aue are plagued by personnel concerns before the first round. Coach Dirk Schuster has to do without some players in the away game at the south-west regional division SSV Ulm. “There will probably be a space or two left on the score sheet,” said Schuster. “It is still our job and our duty to advance one lap. We have to be wide awake from the first minute and show that we are the higher-class team.”

Even in times of Corona, the big goal remains the final in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on May 13, 2021. But the road is long. The second round (December 22nd / 23rd) will be drawn on October 18th (6pm). There is also a lot of money involved. In the past season, all participants in the first round received 175,500 euros each. Cup winners FC Bayern ended up with premiums of over ten million euros.
