Mainz fails to Bochum – Bremen, Stuttgart and Wolfsburg in the round of 16

Wolfsburg The crisis-ridden FSV Mainz 05 failed to make it into the round of 16 of the DFB Cup after turbulent days in a penalty thriller, but the other Bundesliga clubs were not naked.
While Rheinhessen lost 3-0 on penalties against ambitious second division club VfL Bochum, Werder Bremen, VfB Stuttgart and VfL Wolfsburg advanced to the next round on the day before Christmas Eve.

Stuttgart retained the upper hand in the Bundesliga duel against SC Freiburg with 1-0 (1-0). Bremen prevailed 3-0 (2-0) against the second division Hannover 96. Wolfsburg dominated the 4-0 (3-0) against second division SV Sandhausen at will.

Jean-Paul Boetius (7th) and Danny Latza (55th) brought the Mainz team the first day after separating from sports director Rouven Schröder, VfL resembled thanks to Gerrit Holtmann (66th) and Robert’s last-minute goal Tesche (90th + 4) but still out. Adam Szalai, Kevin Stöger and Jean-Philippe Mateta missed for the 05er on penalties.

It is extremely questionable whether Jan-Moritz Lichte will remain coach at the Bundesliga penultimate. A decision is expected soon.

Sasa Kalajdzic (15th) shot promoted Stuttgart against stronger Freiburg after the change in the round of 16. In Hanover, Theodor Gebre Selassie (30th) and Josh Sargent (32nd) met for Bremen and thus ensured the break even before the break Decision. Jean-Manuel Mbom (60th) scored the goal for the final score.

In Wolfsburg, Yannick Gerhardt (27th), striker Wout Weghorst (30th, 90th + 1) and Joao Victor (41st) overcame Sandhausen’s strong goalkeeper Rick Wulle. “That was a great performance from us,” said coach Oliver Glasner.

Meanwhile, regional division Rot-Weiss Essen caused a big surprise in the 3-2 (2-1) win against second division Fortuna Düsseldorf. “Today we were freezing in front of the goal, you have to say that. We had few chances, but we used them immediately,” said Essen captain Marco Kehl-Gomez.

On Tuesday the Bundesliga clubs TSG Hoffenheim (6-7 on penalties against Fürth) and Union Berlin (2-3 against Paderborn) failed because of the second division. Defending champion Bayern Munich (against Holstein Kiel) and the defeated finalist Bayer Leverkusen (against Eintracht Frankfurt) will not play their second round matches until January.

Regardless of this, the round of 16 draw will take place on January 3rd in the ARD sports show. “Losfee” is Olympic ski jumping champion Sven Hannawald.
