DFB Cup preview: who will make the next big sensation?

DFB Cup preview: who will make the next big sensation?

From Stefan Bröhl

GermanyThe first competitive games for (most) first division clubs are coming up! Can the second, third and some fourth division teams benefit from their early start to the season and for a surprise in the 1st round of the DFB Cup care for? An overview.

Who doesn’t remember August 18, 2012? At that time, the Berlin Athletics Club 07 shot TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 4-0 out of the Poststadion and caused one of the greatest sensations of the millennium.

Although the Kraichgauer appeared with Roberto Firmino (29), Jannik Vestergaard (29), Kevin Volland (29), Tim Wiese (39), Sebastian Rudy (31) and many other stars, they went down in front of only 1468 spectators in Berlin-Moabit .

For everyone who was there at the time, it was an unforgettable experience.

On Friday the pairings do not produce such an event. Since Dynamo Dresden plays against SC Paderborn 07 and TSV 1860 Munich receives the weakened SV Darmstadt 98, two close duels at eye level are to be expected. Only a runaway win would really come as a surprise.

It looks different on a packed Saturday. Here the SC Weiche Flensburg 08 against Holstein Kiel can be expected to have a small cup sensation. Many of the players at the ambitious club come from the storks’ youth and should therefore be motivated against the favorite, who got off to a bad start in the second division season (two games, two defeats, 0: 6 goals).

The disadvantage: the season in the Regionalliga Nord does not start until mid-August. So the switch has to do a cold start.

BFC Dynamo and SpVgg Bayreuth as stumbling blocks for VfB Stuttgart and Arminia Bielefeld?

The BFC Dynamo should not be underestimated against VfB Stuttgart despite the three-class difference. The GDR record champions got off to an excellent start into the season and scored three wins from their first three matches in the Regionalliga Nordost (8-2 goals).

He is therefore in the flow – and with veterans like goalgetter Christian Beck (33), the still lightning-fast Matthias Steinborn (32), Darryl Geurts (27) and Andor Bolyki (26) four good attackers in his own ranks who know , what is important in such knockout duels. The defense is also secure. If the Swabians are not fully there against this opponent from the start, it could be tight!

The same applies to the clash between SpVgg Bayreuth and Arminia Bielefeld.

The traditional club from the Regionalliga Bayern is at the forefront after four three-pointers in five games, has had a very good start to the season and has several highly experienced players such as captain Anton Makarenko (32), striker Markus Ziereis (28), central defender Felix Weber (26 ) or midfielder Benedikt Kirsch (25). If the DSC underestimates the opponent, there could be a sensation here too.

This is much less likely in the duel of Locomotive Leipzig and Bayer 04 Leverkusenwhere the Werkself are big favorites. The fourth division got off to a mixed start with four points from three games and was not able to fully convince despite their individual class (for regional league conditions). Lok only has a mini-chance if everything goes well and Bayer has a very weak day.

RB Leipzig have a clear advantage against SV Sandhausen, 1. FC Magdeburg against FC St. Pauli with good chances

The possibilities of SV Sandhausen are a little bigger. But the second division got off to a bad start (two games, two bankruptcies, 0: 5 goals) and a clear outsider against RB Leipzig, despite a well-staffed squad around Dennis Diekmeier (31), Alexander Esswein (31) and Pascal Testroet (30). The team would have to show a completely different face against the Bulls than in the 2nd Bundesliga in order to survive.

It also remains to be seen whether the ambitious fifth division Greifswalder FC around Ronny Garbuschewski (35) can succeed against FC Augsburg.

The fourth division Wuppertaler SV against Bundesliga promoted VfL Bochum and Eintracht Norderstedt from Regionalliga Nord against Hannover 96 are the underdogs.

It should be tighter in the duel between VfL Osnabrück and SV Werder Bremen, even if the green-whites are the favorites. But completely different teams stumbled upon the atmospheric Bremen Bridge.

The well-filled regional league team SSV Ulm can also do a lot against 1. FC Nürnberg. The chances of 1. FC Magdeburg, which is known to be pushed by its audience and is in good shape, appear to be even greater in advance. For the FC St. Pauli The heavily occupied and well-rehearsed third division team of ex-HSV coach Christian Titz (50) could prove to be a stumbling block.

SV Babelsberg 03 released the coach despite two wins from three games, BVB in the corona chaos

Hopes rest against Fürth on Babelsberg's goal scorer Daniel Frahn (34). Can the ex-CFC and RB striker cause a big surprise against the Bundesliga promoted team?

The roles in SV Babelsberg 03’s game against Bundesliga promoted SpVgg Greuther Fürth are much clearer. Only a few days ago, the regional league completely surprisingly dismissed its coach Predrag Uzelac (55) after two wins from the first three games. Whether the eleven around goal scorer Daniel Frahn (34) can compete against the clover leaf with free? At least questionable.

It will also be exciting to see how Borussia Dortmund copes with the corona chaos, who is ready for action and whether new coach Marco Rose (44) has to rely on a U23 central defense. Maybe SV Wehen Wiesbaden can push themselves to a top performance after two 0-0 draws in the 3rd division against BVB and trip the big favorite under these adverse circumstances?

The fans of Hertha BSC fear the same. The old lady traditionally has a hard time in the cup and has a very demanding job with SV Meppen. At the Emsländer, top performer Florian Egerer (23) will be particularly motivated, as he plays against his training club, which gave him no chance with the professionals.

FC Rot-Weiß Koblenz (against SSV Jahn Regensburg) and FC 08 Villingen (against FC Schalke 04), on the other hand, go into their first-round duels as clear underdogs. VfB Oldenburg should also have a hard time against Fortuna Düsseldorf. The same applies to SC Preußen Münster. However, the fourth division receives VfL Wolfsburg, who have had a very poor preparation. Maybe there is something going on for the eagle bearer?

Waldhof Mannheim & Türkgücü could make it exciting against Eintracht Frankfurt & Union Berlin

In addition to Hertha, 1. FSV Mainz 05 often struggles and has an opponent in SV 07 Elversberg, which is firstly well staffed and secondly is quite capable of wrestling a Bundesliga club.

The same applies to FC Carl Zeiss Jena against 1. FC Köln. You should definitely have these two encounters on your radar.

The games between two third division teams against two first division teams should be particularly exciting on Sunday afternoon. SV Waldhof Mannheim welcomes Eintracht Frankfurt and Türkgücü Munich to 1. FC Union Berlin.

It could also get tight here if the two host teams approach their performance limits and stars like Marc Schnatterer (35, Mannheim) or Sercan Sararer (31, Türkgücü) have a good day.

It should be even closer in the internal second division duels between FC Hansa Rostock and 1. FC Heidenheim as well as FC Ingolstadt 04 and FC Erzgebirge Aue.

Whether FC Würzburger Kickers (against SC Freiburg) and Eintracht Braunschweig (against Hamburger SV) will look good is doubtful due to their weak start to the season. However, both could play without pressure and knock over the goat.

Lotte’s sporty joy from the Regionalliga West counteracts the stable Karlsruher SC like the clear outsider, while FC Viktoria Köln can be expected to have a surprise against Hoffenheim despite the mixed start to the season. This also applies to 1. FC Kaiserslautern, the Borussia Monchengladbach at the end of the first round to the traditional duel on the Betzenberg.
