DFB Cup: Highlights of the 2nd round

The second round of the DFB Cup is on the program from December 22nd to 23rd and January 12th to 13th. Here you can find information and results about the games.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22nd

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim – SpVgg Greuther Fürth (6.30 p.m.)

Before the cup game against Greuther Fürth, TSG 1899 Hoffenheim replenished their self-confidence. The 2-1 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach was the first success after six games without a win against the foals. But Sebastian Hoeneß’s team has been warned: The shamrocks have been playing an exceptionally good second division season so far and are hibernating in the top group. Most recently there was a clear as well as deserved 3-0 at Eintracht Braunschweig.

FC Augsburg – RB Leipzig (6.30 p.m.)

One of the two Bundesliga teams will get it in the 2nd round. But who? RB Leipzig has been particularly strong defensively recently and has not conceded a goal in the last three Bundesliga games of the year. FC Augsburg, on the other hand, missed the opportunity to hibernate in the upper half of the table on matchday 13.

SSV Ulm – FC Schalke 04 (6.30 pm)

A sobering year for Schalke 04 is drawing to a close. The Royal Blues finish bottom of the table in 2020, have only got one point from three games in the English week before Christmas and thus left the hoped-for big points against fellow competitors in the fight to stay in the league. The Royal Blues were only able to win one victory in the entire Bundesliga year, plus a success in the first round of the cup against Schweinfurt. Will Huub Stevens’ team manage to have a positive experience against the regional division Ulm?

1. FC Köln – VfL Osnabrück (6.30 p.m.)

The billy goats took the curve in December and scored their first Bundesliga victories just in time. Indeed: The situation is still tight, but at least there were success stories against the top teams Dortmund (2: 1) and Leipzig (0: 0). VfL Osnabrück, on the other hand, moves freely through the midfield of the 2nd Bundesliga. The favorite role is clearly at 1. FC Köln.

Eintracht Braunschweig – Borussia Dortmund (8 p.m.)

It was 15 years ago that the two traditional clubs met in the DFB Cup. At that time, the floodlights went out for a few minutes – of all things, in a game between two teams advertising energy suppliers on their jerseys. Eintracht Braunschweig won 2-1 at the time. The signs have changed significantly in the meantime. BVB is a top team in the Bundesliga, Eintracht fights to stay in the 2nd Bundesliga. Given the international experience of the Dortmund team, it is highly unlikely that there will be another coup by the underdog.

1. FC Union Berlin – SC Paderborn 07 (8.45 p.m.)

The Eiserne are in their third season the surprise team of the Bundesliga. The team of coach Urs Fischer pulls through the country as a favorite scare and spoilers. The Köpenickers withdrew from the relegation battle early on, but before the second round of the cup, Union Berlin is sniffing the places for international business and is one point behind runner-up Borussia Dortmund.

SV Elversberg – Borussia Mönchengladbach (8.45 p.m.)

Yes, this season is special for Borussia Mönchengladbach. The team of coach Marco Rose is represented in all three competitions, and especially the group stage in the Champions League with opponents Real Madrid and Inter Milan demanded a lot from the foals. This triple exposure has worked well so far. Perhaps it will continue like this in the coming year: As one of three remaining regional league clubs, SV Elversberg stands in the way of Borussia.

Dynamo Dresden – SV Darmstadt 98 (8.45 p.m.)

The lilies are guests of the second division relegated from Dresden. On the weekend before the last game of the year there was a 2-0 home win over second division shot light Würzburg. A success that at Darmstadt 98 made for relief instead of great euphoria, as coach Markus Anfang said: “Everyone has been waiting for us not to win or even lose. The boys did well. It is not a matter of course that we will Won the game. “

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 23

Rot-Weiss Essen – Fortuna Düsseldorf (6.30 p.m.)

The matter should be clear on paper, but second division Fortuna Düsseldorf has been warned of the clash with regional division Rot-Weiss Essen: The Revierclub leads the fourth division and is hot for the cup coup. The state capital, in turn, have recovered after relegation to the Bundesliga. Central defender Andre Hoffmann sums it up like this: “The process is not over, we are right in the middle. We are not yet a top team, but we are on the right track.”

VfL Wolfsburg – SV Sandhausen (6.30 p.m.)

Even before the Bundesliga game against VfB Stuttgart on Sunday, there was bad news for VfL Wolfsburg. Maximilian Arnold and Jerome Roussillon tested positive for the corona virus. In addition, Maximilian Philipp, Xaver Schlager and Tim Siersleben had to go into quarantine at home as a precautionary contact. The five failures will accompany the Lower Saxony until the second round match against SV Sandhausen, which is in danger of relegation.

VfB Stuttgart – Sport-Club Freiburg (8.45 p.m.)

VfB Stuttgart has had a good season so far. The Swabians mastered their return to the Bundesliga much better than before. The team of coach Pellegrino Matarazzo even has the leading group in sight. The Freiburg Sport Club, on the other hand, successfully completed the English Week and regained self-confidence. All of these parameters no longer play a role after kick-off: The game is a Derby Prestige guaranteed.

1. FSV Mainz 05 – VfL Bochum 1848 (8.45 p.m.)

The signs before the duel between the Bundesliga and the second division could hardly be more different. Mainz 05 suffered a real setback on the last match day of the year: Against Bremen, Jan-Moritz Lichte’s team conceded the decisive goal for the 0-1 defeat in the last minute. VfL Bochum, on the other hand, won 3-0 in their own stadium against Heidenheim and has been hoping for promotion to the Bundesliga for a long time.

Hannover 96 – SV Werder Bremen (8.45 p.m.)

SV Werder recently brushed off a major shortcoming: In Mainz, the team of coach Florian Kohfeldt did not concede a goal – after there had been far too many of them before. And something else went well: Tactically, what the Hanseatic League had to offer in the 1-0 win at Rheinhessen was pretty decent. Will that be enough to overcome the Hannover 96 hurdle?

SV Wehen Wiesbaden – SSV Jahn Regensburg (8.45 p.m.)

First there were three defeats in a row, then Jahn stopped the negative run. Most recently, however, Mersad Selimbegovic’s eleven stepped on the spot in the 2nd Bundesliga. The 0-0 home draw against Hannover 96 did not satisfy the Regensburg team. In the 2nd round of the DFB-Pokal, Jahn could have a positive experience.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 12th

Bayer 04 Leverkusen – Eintracht Frankfurt (8.45pm)

Bayer 04 Leverkusen almost wintered in first place. If it weren’t for world footballer Robert Lewandowski, who shot the Werkself from the top of the table in stoppage time. Anyway: The team of coach Peter Bosz did not lose twelve games in a row – it only happened against the record champions FC Bayern. But be careful: Eintracht Frankfurt is also hard to beat this season. Adi Hütter’s team has only lost two games.

WEDNESDAY 13TH JANUARY

Holstein Kiel – FC Bayern Munich (8.45pm)

It’s a duel between the two winter champions: FC Bayern jumped to first place on the last day of the year, Holstein Kiel led the table in the 2nd Bundesliga at the turn of the year. No extra motivation is needed for the underdog from the Kiel Fjord: Every team wants to trip the defending champion.
