DFB Cup: FC Bayern must go to the Middle Rhine representative – BVB against Duisburg

1st round draw

The first main round of the DFB Cup was drawn on Sunday evening – in an unusual way due to the consequences of the corona pandemic. Because 23 of the 64 participants from the lower divisions for the coming season have not yet been determined, placeholders were used for them in the draw. On the other hand, the representatives of the small clubs were not allowed to be there because of the Corona rules – as is usually the case in the German Football Museum in Dortmund.

Bayern Munich’s opponents have not yet been finalized. The record champion and defending champion will make a guest appearance at the winner of the Mittelrhein State Cup, where 1. FC Düren will play against Viktoria Arnoldsweiler in the semi-finals in mid-August and FC Pesch will play against Alemannia Aachen. The MSV Duisburg drew another big lot with the BVB.

It is one of only nine encounters in which the two opponents are already known. For example, Eintracht Frankfurt, Werder Bremen or Bayer Leverkusen have to win state cup competitions that have not yet ended. In the duel between the Bundesliga and the 2nd Bundesliga, RB Leipzig and 1. FC Nürnberg compete, while Hertha BSC is visiting Eintracht Braunschweig.

The first round of the cup is to be played from September 11th to 14th, one week before the start of the season in the Bundesliga and second division. The second round will take place shortly before Christmas (December 22nd / 23rd). There are also fixed dates for the round of 16 (February 2 and 3, 2021) and the quarter-finals (March 2 and 3). The semifinals should not take place during the week as usual, but on the first weekend in May. Also unusual: the finale in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium is not planned for a Saturday evening, but for Thursday, May 13th (Ascension Day).

The remaining participants will be determined in the cup finals of the national associations. The problem: Because of the Corona break, not only have the finals been postponed, there are even quarter-finals. The postponed final day of the amateurs will take place on August 22nd.
