Dynamo Dresden lost another surprise in the DFB Cup and was eliminated on Wednesday (October 30) by the second division team Darmstadt 98. The SGD lost 2:3 (0:0, 2:2) after extra time.
Cup fight with five goals
In front of 30,070 spectators in the Rudolf Harbig Stadium, Aleksandar Vukotic gave the hosts the lead (56th). Substitute Jakob Lemmer (84′) equalized before Tobias Kempe (90’+2) put the Lilies back in the lead with a penalty kick. Lemmer again (90th + 11th) guaranteed extra time. In this, Isac Lidberg (98th) fired the Lilies into the round of 16.
There were hardly any chances in the first half
Against a very defensive Dynamo side who knocked out second division side Fortuna Düsseldorf in the first round, the Lilies dominated the first half without causing any danger. The hosts, who appeared only occasionally in the opponent’s half during this period, had a good chance through Christoph Daferner (8th), who hit the side net.
From the 30th minute onwards, Dynamo grew more confident, winning a 5-1 corner advantage to break them, but only had a half-chance after a sharp cross from Philip Heise. Darmstadt’s Fraser Hornby had the only chance shortly before the half-time whistle. Robin Meißner steered his shot from the turn onto the crossbar.
Dresden is almost always the same
In the second half, both teams broke down their basic order and played more forward. Nevertheless, the visitors’ lead was surprising. After the third corner, Vukotic used his height and went into an unstoppable shot. Just two minutes later he almost scored a second time, but his shot went over the goal.
Now things got exciting. Schuhen (63′) saved the lead with a rebound after Meißner’s header. After that, chances arose on both sides, although Darmstadt were more dangerous after counter-attacks. Lemmer scored a final goal for Dynamo. When referee Tobias Stieler punished Jonas Sterner’s contact with Lidberg with a penalty, Kempe was there, but Lemmer scored again with a powerful shot, so it went into extra time. A counter goal from Lidberg made the final decision.
