DFB Cup 22/23: Fans should note these innovations Sports

Cup scent is in the air!

Almost three months after RB Leipzig won the 2022 cup against SC Freiburg, the new season is in DFB Cup. From July 29th to August 1st, the teams play the first round, determine the clubs that advance to the second round. But: This season there are some changes!

What’s new in the DFB Cup?

▶︎ kicking off: The first round (July 29th to August 1st) will be played earlier this time. That means exactly: Saturday (July 30) and Sunday (July 31) two games start at 1 p.m. instead of 3:30 p.m. At noon on Saturday, Viktoria Berlin have to play against VfL Bochum and Straelen against St. Pauli. On Sunday, Rehden will play against Sandhausen and Bremer SV against Schalke at 1 p.m. Six games start at 3.30 p.m. each, three more on Saturday and Sunday at 6 p.m.

▶︎ TV: In this cup season, 15 games will be shown on free TV. ARD and ZDF share the games. ARD showed 13 games live on free TV until last season. The first two games that can be seen on free TV:

  • July 29: 1860 Munich – BVB (8.45 p.m. / ZDF)
  • August 1: 1. FC Magdeburg – Eintracht Frankfurt (8.45 p.m. / ARD)

▶︎ Drawn Round of 16: Instead of playing the quarter-finalists over two days, as before, the round of 16 games will now be stretched over two weeks. For the 22/23 season the dates are: January 31st/January 1st. February and 7./8. February 2023.
