This question will be answered by the semi-final draw, which will take place next Sunday from 7 p.m. – fans can follow the draw on the ARD sports show.
It is obvious that the top trio in the Bundesliga is now out of the running. Union Berlin, third in the table, lost in the quarter-finals to Eintracht Frankfurt (0-2), followed by leaders Bayern with their defeat by Freiburg (1-2) and second-placed Dortmund lost to Leipzig (0-2).
It also means that Freiburg and RB Leipzig are still in contention, which means that the 2022 final is now within reach again in 2023. Will these two teams meet in the semi-finals?
These teams are in the semi-finals:
- Eintracht Frankfurt
- SC Freiburg
- VfB Stuttgart
- RB Leipzig
When does the semi-final take place?
The DFB Cup semifinals will take place on May 2nd and 3rd, 2023. The final in Berlin will then be held on June 3, 2023, logically a draw is not required.
Who is allowed to take part in the DFB Cup at the beginning?
In addition to the 36 professional teams in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga of the past season, the four best-placed teams in the 3rd Bundesliga from the previous season are sure to be there (Magdeburg has been determined so far).
These 40 teams are joined by the 21 state cup winners and one team each from the three state associations with the most members, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony.

Who is broadcasting the DFB Cup games?
Pay TV broadcaster Sky has the rights to broadcast all 63 games live. Instead of the previous 13, 15 games will be shown live on free TV from 2022/23, including the two semi-finals and the final. ARD and ZDF share these rights. ZDF is thus back in the DFB Cup business after more than ten years of a cup “broadcast break”.
