DFB Cup 2022/23: draw, participants, TV, dates

In May, the focus will be on the 2022/23 DFB Cup season. When will be drawn, who is already qualified – and what will change with the TV rights.

At the end of July, the hunt for the DFB Cup will resume.

How the 64 participants in the 2022/23 DFB Cup are determined:

In addition to the 36 professional teams from the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga of the past season, the four best-placed teams from the 3rd Bundesliga from the previous season are sure to be there. This year they are 1. FC Magdeburg, Eintracht Braunschweig, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and 1860 Munich.

These 40 teams are joined by the 21 state cup winners and one team each from the three state associations with the most members, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony. 20 decisions were made on the final day of the amateurs alone.

These teams are qualified for the DFB-Pokal 2022/23:

Oberliga: FC Unity Wernigerode (as state cup finalist Saxony-Anhalt, because opponent Magdeburg was already qualified), FV Engers (as winner of the Rhineland Cup), SV Oberachern (as state cup winner in South Baden), TSG Neustrelitz (as state cup winner in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania), Schott Mainz (as state cup winner ), Bremer SV (winner of the Bremen state cup), Stuttgarter Kickers (winner of the Württemberg state cup), Blau-Weiß Lohne (winner of the Lower Saxony state cup)

Only one participant is missing: the champions of the Westphalian Oberliga, who are automatically qualified for the 1st DFB Cup round.

The dates of the 2022/23 DFB Cup season:

29./30./31. July / 1. August 2022: Round 1 *
18th/19th October 2022: 2nd round
January 31/January 1 February and 7./8. February 2023: Round of 16
4th/5th April 2023: Quarterfinals
2nd/3rd May 2023: Semifinals
June 3, 2023: Final in Berlin

*Because champions Bayern and the DFB Cup winners are playing for the DFL Supercup on July 30, these two teams will only play their first round games on July 30/31. August out

The draw for the 1st DFB Cup round 2022/23:

The draw for the first round of the DFB Cup this year was on Sunday, May 29, from 7:15 p.m. in the German Football Museum in Dortmund. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and World Champion Kevin Großkreutz were there as “lot fairies”.

The DFB Cup 2022/23 live on TV:

There are changes to the TV rights for the new season. Instead of the previous 13, 15 games will be broadcast live on free TV via ARD and ZDF, including the two semi-finals and the final. Pay-TV broadcaster “Sky” will continue to show all 63 games live.
