The amount of desalinated water produced by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in the third quarter of this year reached 40.5 billion gallons, an increase of 4.64%, compared to the same period last year.
The authority said in a statement yesterday that the “peak daily demand” for desalinated water reached 455 million gallons, an increase of 4.92%, in response to the increase in demand and keeping up with the growth never seen before in Dubai.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority said: “In line with our efforts to increase the authority’s desalinated water production capacity from the current 495 million gallons per day to 735 million gallons per day by 2030 , and to keep up with the qualitative economic growth that the Emirate of Dubai has seen urban prosperity according to the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33) and Plan Urban Dubai 2040, the huge growth in population, and the constant increase in the demand for water in all sectors. For domestic, commercial and other consumption, we rely on innovation and the use of the latest technologies and solutions to increase water resources, and our advanced infrastructure, and continue to provide our services 100 %, according to the highest available international standards, reliability and efficiency.”
He said: “The Authority has moved to develop water production plants using reverse osmosis technology to desalinate seawater, as it requires less energy than multi-stage distillation plants, which makes it a more sustainable option for water desalination,” notes that by 2030. The Authority aims to extract 100% of water from a combination of clean energy, which combines renewable energy sources and waste heat.
