DENVER — Devon Toews scored with 4:26 left in the game and Darcy Kuemper stopped 38 shots to give the Colorado Avalanche their 28th home win, this time 3-2 over the Pittsburgh Penguins. .

This 28th win on the ice at the Ball Arena equals the team record set in 2000-2001 and reissued in 2017-18. The Avalanche’s 28-4-3 record at home is the best in the NHL.

Nicolas Aubé-Kubel and Mikko Rantanen also found the back of the net in this fast-paced game where only one penalty was awarded.

In the Penguins camp, Mike Matheson and Sidney Crosby scored. It’s Crosby’s 1,397th career point, one point behind Jari Kurri and Alex Ovechkin who precede him for 21st in NHL history.

Toews’ game-winning goal came just 27 seconds after Matheson tied the two teams at 2-2.

Shortly after the Avalanche took control at 3-2, Darren Helm took the only penalty of the game. The locals, however, were able to hold on shorthanded.

They were then put under pressure again when the Penguins removed goaltender Tristan Jarry in favor of a sixth skater, but once again the Avs didn’t give up.

In the loss, Jarry stopped 35 shots.
