Several previous studies have shown that sleeping less than 6 hours a night increases the risk of early death from cardiovascular disease, and daily irregular sleep can double the risk of developing heart disease. In a new study, scientists from the University of Exeter in England have found out what time it is best to go to bed to avoid problems with the cardiovascular system.
Research progress
The authors of the study studied data from 88 thousand people, whose sleep and wake time was tracked using an accelerometer on the wrist for 7 days. Scientists conducted a survey of participants to get data on their age, lifestyle, physical health , they also received information about whether the participants in the experiment smoke, about their body mass index, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Also, scientists received information about the irregularity of sleep, about the time of falling asleep and waking up, and the duration of sleep within 24 hours. A few years later, scientists again conducted new observations, but for this they selected 3,172 people from the previous sample in order to detect the presence of cardiovascular diseases.
Research results
As a result, scientists found that those who went to bed at midnight or later were 25% more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than those who went to bed between 10:00 p.m. and 10:59 p.m. Those who went to bed between 23:00 and 23:59 had a 12% higher risk of getting sick.

“Our work shows that there is an optimal time to go to sleep and deviations can be hazardous to health ,” says David Plance of the University of Exeter.
According to scientists, the risk of cardiovascular disease in violation of sleep patterns was greater in women , although the reasons for this are not yet clear.
Results are not final
But scientists say other factors may have contributed to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease, as several years have passed since initial monitoring. But this study added weight to the theory that healthy sleep may be the key to a healthy heart.
“While our results do not show a clear causal relationship, bedtime is a potential factor in increasing the risk of heart disease. If our results are confirmed in other studies, this could reduce the risk of disease,” says Plance.
