Development of statistics: Reflection on the new national strategy

Libreville, Thursday, June 29, 2023 (Infos Gabon) – The activities of the second phase 2023-2025 have been launched since Monday in Libreville during a five-day seminar.

It started with the second national strategy for the development of statistics 2023-2025 with the launch of its activities last Monday. This work initiated by Pierre Claver Mfouba, representing the Minister of Economy and Recovery at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Libreville aims to make a diagnosis of the national statistical system which should lead to sectoral diagnoses in terms of production and dissemination of statistical data. During the five days of reflection, participants from the General Directorate of Statistics and statisticians from each ministerial department, private companies and development partners will take stock of the national statistical system and will have to produce a roadmap which will have to lead the next national strategy for the development of statistics in our country. “This is a very important phase of the process which should lead to an inventory of the national statistical system of Gabon by highlighting its strengths and weaknesses as well as the challenges to be met”, reminded Pierre Claver. Mfouba.

It should be noted that the first national statistical development strategy put in place in 2011 covered the period 2011-2015. This certainly made progress in the framework of legal and institutional reforms, but was not satisfactory in its practical phase. Among the limitations of phase I is the lack of funding. This is why it is strongly recommended that sector participants identify priority projects in line with the Emerging Gabon Strategic Plan (PSGE) 2010-2025 and the Transformation Acceleration Plan (PAT) 2021-2023. The debates revolve around themes such as demographic and social statistics, economic and financial statistics and rural and environmental statistics.
