Development of an experimental cancer vaccine to treat and prevent brain tumors in mice

[메디컬투데이=최재백 기자] A new cell therapy has been developed that can remove glioblastoma and act as a cancer vaccine to prevent tumor recurrence.

A study published in the journal “Science Translational Medicine” found that a new cell therapy has been developed that can remove glioblastoma and act as a cancer vaccine to prevent tumor recurrence.

Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital tested the efficacy of an experimental cell therapy in a mouse model of glioblastoma. The research team said they had a simple idea to convert cancer cells into cancer-removing cells and vaccines.

They aimed to use genetic engineering techniques to turn cancer cells into tumor-destroying treatments and stimulate the immune system to eliminate primary tumors and prevent cancer.

According to the research team, the new cell therapy uses live cancer cells, unlike most cancer vaccines which use inactive cancer cells.

The research team reported that ‘Therapeutic Cancer Cells (ThTC)’, which engineered tumor cells to secrete cell death and immunomodulatory substances, showed the effect of removing glioblastoma tumors formed in mice.

They predict that the new cell therapy could be used to treat cancers other than glioblastoma and predict that a cancer vaccine with a similar principle will be available within 3 to 5 years.

Experts assessed that this study manipulated living cancer cells to directly kill cancer cells, activate the immune system, and reduce tumor immunosuppression, thereby promoting the anti-tumor action of the immune system.
