Developers of Cities: Skylines II Address Performance Issues and Frame Rate Optimization

The developers will not limit the framerate, but will try to optimize the game as best as possible after release.

Colossal Order Studio Staff answered for a few questions about the city-planning simulator Cities: Skylines II, which will be released on PC on October 24, 2023. Among other things, they commented on the game’s performance situation, which was criticized by many reviewers. The authors of Cities: Skylines II reported that the target frequency is not 60, but 30 fps.

Our target frame rate is 30 frames per second, since due to the nature of the game, a city building simulator does not really benefit from a higher frame rate, unlike multiplayer shooters. In games like ours, it is much more important to avoid stuttering and ensure a responsive interface.

For this reason, the simulation in the game is built at a target frequency of 30 fps. However, getting 60 fps won’t hurt, as it will improve the visual perception of time effects. Because of this, although our target frame rate is 30 fps, we are not going to limit it or stop optimization work just because we have reached the desired frame rate on the recommended hardware.

Colossal Order said it has already made changes to the release version of Cities: Skylines II that will increase the average frame rate without affecting the simulation. To do this, they slightly reduced the quality of the picture, but to what extent is unknown. According to the developers, in the coming patches the performance situation will improve significantly with default graphics settings.

According to benchmark German publication PC Games Hardware, Cities: Skylines II provided an average of more than 30 fps on all tested video cards at 1080p resolution and minimal graphics settings. However, if you increase the graphics settings to “high,” the frame rate drops sharply, including on the RTX 4090, which in this case provided an average of 38.1 fps.

At 1440p resolution, none of the tested video cards provided more than 30 fps at “high” graphics settings. Apparently, even owners of flagship graphics accelerators will have to reduce the parameters at release. At “low” graphics settings, video cards from the RX 6700 XT and more powerful provided more than 60 fps.

The author of the YouTube channel City Planner Play conducted his own performance testing in Cities: Skylines II. He found that many mid-budget video cards can provide more than 30 fps at low graphics settings. In addition, he discovered that the game’s frame rate drops are reduced if vertical sync is disabled.
