It has now permeated everywhere. That company seems to have made its name out of it, but it is now a widely and widely applied marketing concept and enhanced by social media. Years ago I worked in buildings in Amsterdam that housed several start-ups, it surprised me at the time how often I came across the concept on the whiteboards. I think it is especially important to evaluate whether this is an artificially created scarcity.
I attribute it mainly to “skimming the market”. I see mechanisms emerging in every niche to be able to attract customers at a higher price point and because of the low volumes, they do not run such a great risk if it doesn’t catch on a bit. If it does sell well and is popular, however, the prices go through the roof and the hypetrain creates a lot of good PR.
We here at tweakers probably know it mainly from the dramas at GPUs over the past two years. But I see it everywhere: clothes and shoes (sneakers specifically, which has also become a really bizarre multi-billion dollar market) now also have full “drop culture” embraced. At a fixed interval, a limited edition of a product line comes out. Some companies use news to build hype, others try to create connection with exclusive offers for members.
A fairly common shoe, the Air Jordan 1, if you can find them in the store or win the draw in the Nike app, costs between 100 and 200 euros. But some sought-after models from well-known rappers of designers so only come out in small drops and then cost easily thousands of euros on the second-hand market (link is sorted by “Last Sale”, the big number is the Lowest Ask). It is the collaborations with big names that are usually guaranteed to yield a lot, but you can also score well with up & coming designers.
I see it in my other hobbies as well: Games Workshop, the company behind Warhammer 40K, now also has a bit more miniatures that only temporarily available to be.
Wizards of the Coast, known from Magic: The Gathering, has also had their Secret Lair series for quite some time now. in which it is mainly the collaborations with other IP that sell well. So there are now 2 Fortnite sets on the page for 34-50 eu for 7(!) tickets, but recently there was also one that hooked up to the lgbt+ pride month.
On the other hand, I also know several who have funded their own collection in this way: If you are already in the community and news feeds and know that a popular model can go upside down 2-5x, you can easily create your own purchase plus earn a bonus.
