Developer creates video capture card for Game Boy – Gaming – .Geeks

Developer Sebastian Staacks has created a video capture card that works specifically for the Game Boy. It allows the user to record gameplay footage on their old handheld or stream it to their PC, without the need for an emulator.

Fleece he writes in a blog post how exactly GB Interceptor works. It is an adapter that the user can plug into an unmodified Game Boy to record a video from a game and stream it to a computer via USB. The developer points out that GB Interceptor will not work on Game Boys that contain an HDMI port or on Game Boy clones that use emulators.

The GB Interceptor plugs into the handheld’s cartridge port. Then the user connects the desired game cartridge to the Interceptor itself. Thus the user can play on the original Game Boy hardware, while the GB Interceptor’s USB cable can be connected to a PC for video recording or streaming.

When you plug in the adapter, your PC should recognize it as a webcam so that the video can be saved. It appears that GB Interceptor currently works best with Linux, notes Staacks. With Windows and Android, video apps have trouble formatting the stream, and with macOS it is not possible to record video.
