Devastation Strikes Eastern Libya as Hurricane Daniel Claims 2,800 Lives

Anatolia News Agency quoted Libyan medical sources as saying that about 2,800 people died as a result of the floods that swept through the cities of eastern Libya due to the Mediterranean Hurricane “Daniel” that struck the country at dawn on Sunday.

In a statement, the Presidential Council of Libya declared Derna, Shahat, and Al-Bayda in Cyrenaica in the east as disaster areas, due to the floods that swept them.

He said in the statement, “Out of a sense of responsibility and in view of the grave repercussions of the disaster, we declare that area a disaster zone and ask brotherly and friendly countries and international organizations to provide assistance and support.”

Death toll from Hurricane Daniel

In a special statement to Anadolu, a member of the Crisis Room of the Libyan Red Crescent Society said, “The total statistics that reached the room from all branches of the Red Crescent amounted to 2,800 dead.”

The source stated, according to Anadolu, that “the statistics include all the affected cities that were exposed to floods due to the hurricane that struck eastern Libya,” stressing that the dead “among those who died by drowning or due to the collapse of residential buildings.”

He stressed that “the number of those stranded in the affected areas and whose rescue operations are currently underway has reached (7) thousand families,” in addition to “a large number of missing persons who have not yet been identified because many have not been reported missing, especially in Derna, where telephone communications have been cut off.”

The government appointed by the Libyan Parliament declared the city of Derna a disaster area after it was struck by Storm Dania, coming from Greece, whose effects affected the rest of the regions and cities in the east of the country, where it reached its peak on Sunday.
