The number of victims from the strongest earthquake in 120 years that struck Morocco in North Africa has surpassed 2,100.
Aftershocks of magnitude 4.5 were observed on the third day after the earthquake, and as 72 hours, considered the ‘golden time’ for life-saving, approaches, desperate rescue and search operations for survivors continue.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 6.8 earthquake observed about 71km southwest of Marrakech, Morocco at around 11:11 PM local time on the 8th was the strongest earthquake to occur in this area in the past 120 years.
Morocco’s state-run daily newspaper ‘Le Matin’ reported that the Ministry of the Interior provisionally counted 2,122 people dead and 2,421 injured as of 4 pm on the 10th.
Al Haouz Province, where the epicenter is located, suffered the most damage with 1,351 deaths, followed by Tarudat Province with 492 people and Chichaua Province with 201 people.
The newspaper reported that 17 people were killed in the medieval capital of Marrakech.
The Ministry of the Interior predicts that the number of casualties will increase further as the number of critically ill patients is high and rescue and search operations for missing people continue.
The U.S. Geological Survey also determined that the highest probability of 1,000 to 10,000 deaths from this disaster was 35%. However, the possibility of reaching 10,000 to 100,000 people was predicted to be 21%, and the probability of reaching 100,000 or more was predicted to be 6%.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said that more than 300,000 people were affected by this earthquake.
