Sister Mary, who serves at the Holy Family Church in Gaza, recently attended the funeral of 18 Christians who were killed in the bombing.
(Vatican News) As a result of Israeli bombing, part of the complex of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Porphyry in Gaza collapsed, killing 18 Christians. Their funeral was held a few days ago, and among the attendees was Sister Maria del Pilar Llerena Vargas. She testified, “It is very sad and painful to see children saying goodbye to their parents, but it is even more sad and sad to see parents saying goodbye to their children. It is an image that is difficult to erase.”
“Some of these children have participated in different activities in our parish and are families we know and are very close to us,” Sister Maria said. The Sagrada Familia, a Latin congregation in Gaza, has been a refuge for dozens of families, not just Christian ones, since the bombing began. “Many people who were hiding in Orthodox churches came to us to take refuge,” the nun said, “and we took in and cared for some who were slightly injured.” “We have about 700 believers, including nuns from the Missionary Sisters of Charity founded by Mother Teresa and 50 disabled children, nuns from the Sisters of the Rosary and Father Iusuf, as well as our Missionary Sisters of Taoism nuns, the elderly, the sick and children, everyone is cared for here.”
Sister Maria confirmed that there is currently a shortage of water and electricity in Gaza. “We are using water from the well. We don’t know how long it will last. In order to be able to drink mineral water, we have to buy it at a price three times higher than the original price. In a great spirit of charity, we use the best possible way, trying to give everyone what they need.” Sister Maria finally pointed out, “In this parish, we have two Masses every day and can continue to recite the Rosary and implore Mary and the Lord for the peace we long for. We also ask you to join us Let us pray together that the Lord, in His mercy, will grant us peace.
